Polyamide basically consists of carbon atoms and is obtained from crude oil. It does not occur as a plastic fibre, but is produced using complicated chemical processes. Polyamide was originally known as ‘nylon’, but there are now other sub-categories of polyamide, e.g. Perlon and Dederon.
Similar to polyester, polyamide absorbs hardly any moisture, is breathable and is therefore favoured for sportswear. It is also more elastic and retains its shape better than polyester.
Care: Clothing made from polyamide is comparatively easy to care for. It can be washed in the washing machine at between 30 and 60 °C - follow the washing instructions! - and should be hung up dripping wet. Polyamide dries quickly and does not usually need to be ironed.
