Acetate or cellulose acetate is a man-made fiber obtained from wood, but it is not a natural fiber. This fiber became known in the 1930s as an inexpensive substitute for silk.
It is produced by esterifying the plant cellulose with acetic acid. This process then produces cellulose acetate, which can be further modified with the aid of other chemical processes.
