The five-pocket style simply refers to women's or men's jeans that have five pockets. Two back pockets, two front pockets and then an additional small pocket in one of the front pockets (usually on the right-hand side). This fifth trouser pocket is used to store small change and other small items, which is why it is also known as a ‘coin pocket’ or formerly a ‘watch pocket’.
The pocket was first sewn onto the right side of the jeans by Levi Strauss in 1902. Since then, this style of jeans has become indispensable. The size of the fifth pocket has varied considerably over the last 100 years. This is where the name ‘coin pocket’ comes from, instead of ‘watch pocket’, as the pocket is significantly smaller and can therefore no longer hold a watch.
The five pocket style is used for a wide variety of jeans, from boyfriends to chinos.
