Nubuck or velvet is suede leather that has been sanded on the grain side (outside of the skin). The leather is roughened until it has a velvety surface, hence the term ‘velvet’.
This treatment gives the leather a pleasant feel and increased breathability. However, it should be noted that the material is more sensitive to UV rays and stains.
Not to be confused with suede leather or ‘suede’ describes leather that has been sanded on the flesh side. In contrast to velvety nubuck leather, suede leather is significantly rougher.
Suede is open-pored and therefore offers high breathability. This leather finish is therefore often used for shoes and gloves
