History

In 1993, Danish mother Nanny Glerup handcrafted a pair of slippers from the natural wool of her own Gotland sheep. The slippers, loved by family and friends, were so well-made that Nanny's hobby soon turned into a small production – two pairs of slippers per day!

That was the beginning of Glerups.

Nanny and her husband Ove worked hard over the years to improve the production and quality. Many machines and tools were invented and destroyed to keep up with the growing demand for this indoor shoe.

Today, "addicts" around the world get their daily "fix" from 100% pure, natural wool, still lovingly and carefully made from sheep to foot. We hope you enjoy the "year-round comfort" of your new Glerups.

Handmade from 100% pure natural wool

The wool is washed in soft water, then carded and felted. The felt is shaped into socks, which are steam-felted to ensure a perfect fit before soft calf leather soles are glued and then sewn on to guarantee long-lasting durability.

How Nature Produces Wool

The technical wonder of wool begins at the root of the fiber. Before leaving the sheep follicle, each wool fiber is coated with sweat salts and fats (lanolin), which together form a perfect "clothing" for the sheep. The lanolin protects the wool fiber from sun, rain, and wind. The lanolin and the lye in the sweat salts work together to keep the sheep clean. When the sheep get wet, the basic salts of the lye dissolve and, together with the lanolin, form a natural "soap" to keep the sheep clean. The sheep can retain the same "clothing" for many months without discomfort. Glerups' soft water wash has the same effect. It activates the salts of lye and lanolin to form the felting "soap," just like in nature, and cleans the wool. In the outer layers of the wool fibers, fat and protein are so closely bound together that the wool fiber is completely sealed off from liquids. Water vapor can pass through to keep you comfortable, while sweat cannot penetrate. It gets into the actual wool fiber and helps reduce sweat odor to keep those around you comfortable. Wool keeps the sheep's bare skin at the perfect temperature, and the same applies to your bare skin. We recommend trying your Glerups without socks. Wool and skin naturally work together.

From the Farm to Your Feet

Glerups started with wool from the family’s own Gotland sheep. But at Glerups, we never stand still! Over the years, Glerups perfected the wool blend by mixing Gotland wool with high-quality wool from New Zealand farmers.

These farmers meet Glerups' high standards for consistent quality and humane animal welfare. We work closely with our farmers every step of the way, following each pair of Glerups from the sheep to your feet.

The Wool

It took many years for us to find the perfect recipe for our wool blend. Every year, we travel to our farmers to ensure that we develop, test, and innovate together. The technical wonder of wool begins at the root of the fiber and never stops evolving. It is simply amazing to work with wool. We follow every pair of Glerups from the sheep to your feet.

Some farmers in New Zealand are located in areas where it is most convenient to travel by bike.

Authentic Danish Craftsmanship

After the sheep have been sheared, the wool goes through many processes and hands to ensure the highest quality and perfect fit. We take our time to get it right. This is true Danish craftsmanship, on the farm.

Mulesing Free

Mulesing is the procedure widely practiced in Australia and New Zealand, where "excess" skin around the sheep's tail is removed to prevent flystrike. This procedure is done without anesthesia or painkillers and is considered animal cruelty. Glerups wool is guaranteed to be mulesing free.

We all love our Glerups slippers – but don't we sometimes wonder how they are produced? We wanted to find out and visited the production site. It is now located in Aiud, Transylvania, Romania. We made a short film about it – here it is:
