Paulo Pavia
FROM MILITARY CLOTHING TO FASHION ICONS
Although "chino" is often used as a name for a trouser style, chino is in fact the name of a 100% cotton twill fabric. Developed by Sir Harry Lumsden in 1848 while stationed in India, he mixed a combination of coffee, curry and mulberries for dyeing to camouflage his white uniform. The shadow was called khaki after the Hindi word for "dust".
After World War II, the plain trousers and chinos were an everyday sight on the college campus - Hollywood soon followed and led a generation to define chinos as a symbol of effortlessly cool American style.
