Yuka and Hauke (Stadtrand & Co. GmbH) are a yoga teacher and biologist, so we are probably not the typical newcomers to gin. However, we are united by our curiosity and passion for new and unusual things, and so a good year ago we dedicated ourselves to distilling an unusual gin. In addition to juniper, we distil turmeric and red pepper as tone-setting elements, as well as some other botanicals such as bittersweet almonds and coniferous wood. Starting in the home kitchen, we then hatched the plan to distil the first batch of around 250 bottles with a small country distillery in the north in spring 2018.
We ended up with two gins, like brother and sister or pretty good friends. First a London Dry, the Tumeric Raw Gin, which impresses with its clear and edgy structure. Complex and multi-layered, well spiced and full of surprises. From this we then create a second, the Tumeric No.1, which as a New Western Gin is very complex and deep in its aroma structure... and golden yellow in colour.
Gin is our passion. The project of making a gin is something more. We want to break out of our daily routine a bit, create something that goes beyond our comfort zone. In the medium term, we plan to no longer source our botanicals for the "Hamburg-Zanzibar" gin in Germany, but through local small farmers, for example in Zanzibar. We want to involve local ́s in our project to create added value for everyone. Not in the sense of a pumped-up "charity concept" but as a fair and sustainable relationship with the people who really earn their living with the cultivation of the individual botanicals.
