Suit Fabrics – A Closer Look!

Suit Fabrics – A Closer Look!

Today, we're taking another look at fabric quality using our interpretation of a classic pinstripe suit as an example.

The fabric in this case: an exceptionally beautiful, high-twist Tropical Breeze wool with a distinctive grainy texture. Twisted so tightly that the cloth can handle just about anything.

But what does “high-twist” actually mean?

You may remember twisting a piece of string as a child. At first, the string would simply hang loose, but with every turn it became tighter, firmer and gained more spin. In a way, you were manually creating a high-twist yarn.

For our fabrics, the yarn is then singed, removing the fuzzy outer fibres so that only the finest and most durable core remains. Often, two yarns are twisted together to create what is known as a “two-ply yarn”.

What are the benefits? A look and feel that is literally full of tension and character. The fabric hardly wrinkles at all and looks fantastic while doing it!

By the way: if you'd rather have something like this made up as a tweed suit or a winter flannel suit, we could probably outfit the entire Shelby Company. We have fabrics without end from some of the finest mills in the world – beautiful Donegal tweeds, flannels from Fox Brothers, Magee and Dugdale.

In short: if it has a reputation in the world of tailoring, we can turn it into your favourite suit.
